Third bites a charm

My baby is in a nipple biting phase. It’s not because he’s teething (tho he is) or that he doesn’t know it hurts (I yelp like a banshee) but it is his only way of communicating that he is done nursing.

So today when I really wanted him to take a nap, he bit me. Not once, not twice, but three times. Then I finally got up and stuck him in the stroller and he was asleep instantly.

Then after my nervous system recovered, I thought to myself… “bite me once, shame on you. Bite me twice, shame on me. Bite me three times?! GIRL WTF”

Why do I keep doing things knowing it’s not working?

Because we want our past selves to be right. Past me wanted to lay down for nap. So I was doing everything I could to make her happy, even though current me knew better.

Why did I keep pushing on at my former business even tho I heard a voice in my head once say, “if this place burned down I could just be done with it.”

Our culture teaches us that if we just stick with something long enough, we will succeed. Or that it is noble to “tough it out”. Being seen as a quitter is always a bad thing.

Call me crazy, but I am a quitter. I quit things, and I think you should too! To me it is SO crazy to keep going with something that you know isn’t working, or that you hate doing.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean throw in the towel the minute it gets hard or you hit a roadblock. But if you are going bankrupt, or into massive debt, or you are starting to hate your life- then by all means! Throw in the towel! This is not your only good idea, or your only way to make money.

Every time I quit something I am saying no to what’s not working and getting closer and closer to the yesses. To what DOES work. Every time I make more and more money because of it.

So this is your sign. If you are still offering that thing you dread doing, or if you want to donate that really expensive dress you never wear, or if you want to quit your business all together, consider this one vote to honor your truth and really look at that. You are NEVER stuck with the plan your past self came up with.

Your current self always gets the final word.
